Look familiar? The image on the left is the Maxell Wrapper Factory, an early occupant of the building that today houses the Melvin T Strider Colonial Funeral Home (pictured right) in City of Ranson. A.H. Maxell opened the factory in 1903 to produce shirt waists [blouses] and wrappers [bathrobes]. Maxell’s replaced the Benedict Brothers who for one year made shirts at that location. Maxell employed many local women in his enterprise, and by 1910 he had outgrown this space at the northwest 3rd Avenue and Fairfax Boulevard. He moved to the southeast corner of 3rd Avenue and Fairfax Boulevard and continued there until October 1919 when the building was sold to John Robert Poland and Joseph E. Thrasher of the Perfection Garment Company in Martinsburg.
