Saturday marked the anniversary of a dreadful accident in 1951 along Route 340 near Halltown, in which a truck carrying 14 tons of dynamite caught fire and exploded. One individual was killed, and a number of local homes and buildings damaged. These photos show the crater left in the road from the explosion, damage to nearby buildings and trees, and local Bobby Seagams with his foot on a piece of wheel that was among the debris thrown from the truck.

Today's recent acquisitions are photos from Frank T. Carter's grocery store. A Maryland native, by the early 20th century Carter lived in Shepherdstown and operated a grocery store and restaurant there. These photos are high enough quality that if you look closely you can read many of the labels and advertisements for products he was selling to his Jefferson County clientele.
